THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION’S HUMANITARIAN AID IN NICARAGUA October 1998: Hurricane Mitch Starting in 1998, the Commission took four decisions, including a Global Plan, to fund 34 projects managed by European NGO partners and other humanitarian organizations.
July 1999: Eruption of Cerro Negro Volcano, Nicaragua The European Commission took an emergency
decision, which funded two projects executed by European NGOs and organizations
in the Red Cross family.
July 2000: Earthquake in Masaya, Nicaragua The European Commission adopted an emergency decision to finance three humanitarian aid projects run by 3 organizations (2 European NGOs and one United Nations Agency)
2001: Drought in Central America (Nicaragua) An emergency decision was taken to finance two projects under the supervision of 2 European NGOs.
2002: Drought and food crisis The European Commission adopted an emergency decision to finance three national projects and one regional project through 4 NGOs.
2003: Follow-up and monitoring of the nutritional situation in Central America An emergency decision was taken for a regional project with a European NGO.
1996-2006: DIPECHO Action Plans for disaster preparedness Aiming to prevent, prepare for, and mitigate disasters, the Commission implemented four DIPECHO Action Plans in Nicaragua totaling approximately €5.3 million, which have funded 23 projects. The projects selection under the 5th Action Plan is on going.
