Lorenzo Natali Prize for Journalists Launched

The European Commission launches today the 15th edition of the Lorenzo Natali prize for journalists writing on topics of human rights and democracy in the developing world. A total of 50.000 EUR prize money is awarded to outstanding pieces of print and online journalism in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America/Caribbean. Submissions are welcome at www.nataliprize.eu  until 31 January 2007.

The Natali prize is given annually to outstanding journalists for articles on human-rights and democracy in the developing word. With the Lorenzo Natali Prize the European Commission wishes to stress the importance of good governance, human rights and democracy for development. Commissioner Louis Michel said, “Human rights and democratic governance are closely linked to economic and social development. Without democracy, without freedom of press, development cannot be sustainable”.

The Lorenzo Natali Prize was established by the European Commission in 1992. It commemorates Lorenzo Natali, a former European Commissioner for Development and a fervent defender of Human Rights. His work and commitment contributed significantly to increase the importance of development cooperation within the policies of the then European Communities.

The 2006 Lorenzo Natali Prize applies to written and online press journalists who published an article on the defence of Human rights or democracy between 1st September 2005 and 31st December 2006. The European Commission will award prizes in each of the following 5 world regions: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Arab Word, Iran and Israel. The deadline for entries is 31st January 2007.

Last year, the prize attracted a record interest, with 996 nominees from 138 countries. The grand prix 2005 was awarded to the Sri Lankan journalist Ms Wjedasa Namini for the article “Blatant Relentless Child Recruitment” on the practice of recruiting children as soldiers by the Sri-Lankan Tamil-Tigers.
